What LLMs can a single Mac Studio M3 Ultra 512GB run?
A single M3 Ultra 512GB fits even 300B-class MoE at 8-bit. Daily, 4-bit runs Qwen3.8 Flash Next in the 90s; DeepSeek V4 Flash barely slows at 8-bit.

Too bigWon’t fit on one card at this quantization, even with RAM offload.

Who it suits
Good fit
- Running DeepSeek V4 Flash at 4-bit on one machine
All 155.1 GB fits, at about 62 tokens/s, with up to 1M of context
- You want big MoE models at 8-bit
Even GLM 5.3 Flash at 8-bit (341 GB) fits, at about 28 tokens/s
- You don't want to build a multi-GPU server
On the same DeepSeek V4 Flash at 4-bit, a 96GB RTX PRO 6000 has to offload experts to system RAM and manages only about 13 tokens/s
- You want speed on 100B-class MoE models like Qwen3.8 Flash Next
About 92 tokens/s at 4-bit
Not a good fit
- You mainly run 30B-class or smaller models
Gemma 4 31B at 4-bit runs at about 32 tokens/s, a 128GB machine is enough, and 512GB goes unused
- You often feed it whole books or entire codebases
Prompt processing is its weak spot, at only about a tenth of an RTX 5090's speed in community tests
- You want to run large dense models
Dense models read all of their weights for every token, so they're slow even when they fit; Gemma 4 31B at 8-bit manages only about 18 tokens/s
Before you buy
You can no longer buy it new
In early March 2026, Apple dropped 512GB from the M3 Ultra Mac Studio's configuration options. The new Mac Studio announced in August switched to the M5 Ultra, whose 512GB version won't ship until late October. So M3 Ultra 512GB machines today come almost entirely from the used market and retail stock.
Check that it's really 512GB
512GB was only available with the top M3 Ultra (32-core CPU, 80-core GPU); the 60-core GPU version maxes out at 256GB, and memory can't be added after purchase. When inspecting a machine, check the memory and GPU core count in System Information. If it's listed as 512GB but has a 60-core GPU, the configuration is definitely wrong.
Clear Activation Lock on a used machine
If Activation Lock is on, an Apple silicon Mac still needs the original owner's Apple Account to activate, even after being erased and reinstalled. Before the deal, have the seller turn off Find My Mac in Find My and sign out of their Apple Account, then power it on in front of you to confirm.
Be prepared for slow prompt processing
Generation speed depends on memory bandwidth, and 819 GB/s is plenty. Prompt processing depends on compute, which is exactly where the M3 Ultra falls short: its GPU lacks the neural accelerators of the M5 generation. When you feed in lots of material with a 1M context, you'll wait a long time for the first token. In community tests, its prompt processing is only about a tenth of an RTX 5090's (that data used 2023's llama.cpp; newer versions are about 20% faster, but the gap is still several-fold). Apple says the new M5 Ultra processes prompts up to 4 times as fast as the M3 Ultra.
Multiple units can form a cluster
Starting with macOS 26.2, RDMA over Thunderbolt 5 is supported: up to four Mac Studios can be connected directly to each other, pooling memory with exo or MLX to run bigger models. RDMA is off by default and has to be enabled in Recovery mode; the M3 Ultra has six Thunderbolt 5 ports, enough for the cabling.
