How to Deploy GLM 5.3 Locally
GLM 5.3 is Zhipu's 744B flagship MoE, released in late August 2026. It shares a base model with GLM 5.2, and post-training made it a notch stronger at coding and long tasks. At 4-bit it is about 467 GB. The usual local setups are eight cards with 64GB or more each, four DGX Sparks, or a 12-channel DDR5 server with one large card and the experts in system RAM; the only single machine with the capacity is the 512GB Mac Studio. The license is also no longer plain MIT: it adds a safety review for large API providers.

Can a single GPU run GLM 5.3?
Not on one card. Even 2-bit needs about 254 GB, more than two and a half times the largest 96GB card. The closest single machine is the 512GB Mac Studio M3 Ultra: 2-bit and 3-bit fit as is, and 4-bit fits once you raise the memory limit macOS places on the GPU. Leave headroom for context too: it only partly compresses the context it keeps in memory, and the full 1M window takes a little over 90 GB more than 32K. Thinking also can't be switched off and defaults to the deepest level, so on a Mac that tops out in the 20s and 30s of tokens/s, answers take a while. With GPUs, the way forward is multiple cards or offloading experts to a big-memory server.

How many GPUs do you need to run GLM 5.3?
The usual local build is eight 96GB RTX PRO 6000 cards on 4-bit, at about 42 tokens/s; 4-bit plus 32K of context is about 471 GB, which four cards can't cover. Dropping to 2-bit gets it onto four cards, while the 48GB RTX A6000 needs eight even for 2-bit. Four DGX Spark units can hold 4-bit too, but manage only around 8 tokens/s, and linking four of them takes a network switch. For perspective, the official vLLM recipe starts at eight H200s; this model was planned for the data center.

What PC or server build do you need to run GLM 5.3 locally?
For a model this big, the most realistic single-machine route is a 12-channel DDR5 server with one RTX PRO 6000 and the experts in system RAM: about 23 tokens/s at 4-bit (with 384GB of RAM installed), about 13 at 8-bit (with every slot filled for 768GB) and about 42 at 2-bit. At 2-bit you can also step down to a used 8-channel DDR4 server with an RTX 3090, at about 14 tokens/s. KTransformers, listed on the model card, is built for exactly this kind of hybrid CPU-plus-GPU inference, and you can follow its GLM 5.2 guide.

What to know before running GLM 5.3 locally
Thinking can be tuned but not turned off
Set thinking strength with
reasoning_effort, choosing among low, high and max; the default is max, and unlike 5.2 it can't be turned off completely. For chat, setclear_thinkingto true, or thinking from earlier turns will keep taking up context. Sampling parameters:temperature1.0 andtop_p0.95 for general tasks; for long-running agent tasks, changetop_pto 1.0.The extra license clause
The new clause applies only to “model as a service”: API providers with very large revenue must pass Zhipu's safety review before commercial use. Building the model's capabilities into a feature of your own product, or simply forwarding requests, doesn't count as model as a service; individuals and ordinary companies deploying it themselves are unaffected.
Framework versions
The body of the vLLM recipe says 0.28.0 and up, but the page lists 0.29.0 as the minimum, so installing 0.29 or later is the safest bet. The official main repository has switched to FP8 weights, with BF16 in a separate GLM-5.3-BF16 repository. For llama.cpp with Unsloth's GGUFs, you need a build from July 24, 2026 onward (with the sparse-attention indexer). The glm-5.3 entry in the Ollama library only has a :cloud tag; it's a cloud version that doesn't run locally.
Quantization
Unsloth recommends UD-IQ2_M among the 2-bit quants. By its tests, the dynamic 1-bit version picks the same top token as the original about 76% of the time, and 2-bit about 81%; the closest to the original are the 4-bit and 5-bit dynamic quants (UD-Q4_K_XL, UD-Q5_K_XL), with 4-bit at about 467 GB.
A chat template gotcha
GLM's chat template uses a .{id}. syntax that many inference engines don't recognize. Unsloth changed it to [id] in its own version; if you hit template errors with weights from other sources, you can make the same change.
